Observational approach to planet formation

Ralph Neuhaeuser, U. Jena

We will briefly present different previous successful techniques for the detection of extra-solar planets: radial velocity, transit, and astrometry. All or most planets found by such techniques are Gyr old, so that it is difficult to conclude about planet formation. We will then present and discuss two relatively new techniques for planet detection, which can also be applied to younger systems (few to tens of Myr): Direct detection by AO imaging and a transit planet search in young open clusters. The last project is a new collaboration between Jena and Toruń Universities, and several other institutes with small to medium-size telescopes around the world.
